On or about February 17, 2023 a small TIGHAR team will transport scientists from the Newfoundland Memorial University Paleoecology Laboratory to Gull Pond to take core samples of the pond sediment. Sediment on the bottom of Newfoundland ponds builds up very slowly and radio isotope analysis of core samples can reveal detailed information about the pond’s history. The sediment could reveal traces of a crash event such as lead from the fuel, charcoal from the explosion/fire, microscopic bits of wood that is not native to Newfoundland, or even traces of linen fabric. Evidence like that would be a tremendous boost to the search expedition, postponed from last year, and now planned for later this spring. TIGHAR video producer Mark Smith will shoot ground-level and drone video for a documentary of the expedition we’ll make available to everyone who contributes at least $100.
